SCG MOU Partner Study carbon capture and utilization technology From cement production in Thailand, aiming for Net Zero for cement and concrete products by 2050.

January 13, 2565 Mr. Surachai Nimlaor, Chief Innovation & Technology Officer of SCG Cement Company Limited, revealed that In the past, the cement industry in Thailand released 30 million tons of greenhouse gases/year in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

SCG therefore signed an MOU on studying the feasibility of carbon capture and utilization of combustion gases. released from the cement production process in Thailand and the ASEAN region Together with representatives from 2 companies:

  1. Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd. (NSE)
  2. Thai Nippon Steel Engineering and Construction Company Limited (TNS)

This cooperation received funding from the Japanese government. To achieve the goal of Net Zero Cement & Concrete by 2050.

For this plan, Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), technology for capturing combustion gases at relatively low pressure, has been introduced. and low concentrations of carbon dioxide in large quantities, such as gases from all types of combustion and gas from cement factory chimneys To study the feasibility of a chemical adsorption carbon dioxide capture system developed in-house (ESCAP) and used in a cement production plant in Saraburi Province.

Including creating a business model to put carbon dioxide to good use. By changing to methane gas and extract oxygen gas produced from production It will be used in cement factories again. Some of the heat generated from the system will be recycled into the ESCAP system.

Initially, SCG plans to prepare a pilot factory developed in collaboration with NSE in 2024, using the results of studying the feasibility of such technology. Use the information to design and install commercial plants. In line with SCG's ESG 4 Plus guidelines, including:

  1. Aiming for Net Zero
  2. Go Green
  3. Lean inequality
  4. Emphasize cooperation with Plus, trust and transparency
