South Korean court approves arrest warrant for South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was wanted while in office after refusing three summonses
Today, 31 December 2567 A South Korean court has approved an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yeol and a search of his residence after he refused three subpoenas for questioning. This makes Yoon Suk-yeol the first South Korean president to be issued an arrest warrant while in office.
The investigation team consists of:Office of the Attorney General's Corruption Investigation Bureau (CIO), the National Investigation Agency (NOI), and the Defense Ministry's Investigation Office confirmed that the Seoul Western District Court approved the arrest warrant for President Yoon this morning over the unlawful declaration of martial law on the night of December 3.
The CIO in charge of the case revealed that President Yoon failed to appear at his office in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, on Sunday, December 29, as summoned by the CIO, which is the third time President Yoon has refused to be summoned twice before, on December 18 and December 25.
However, the CIO's refusal to appear for three summons prompted the court to request an arrest warrant for President Yoon, as three summonses are normally the maximum number required for an investigation agency to request an arrest warrant for a suspect.
Yoon's presidential powers have been suspended since Dec. 14 after South Korea's parliament passed a motion to impeach him, accusing him of failing to comply with the constitutional requirement to declare martial law.
