“European stock markets” open negatively as markets worry about Trump preparing to impose a 25% tariff on EU goods; investors continue to monitor corporate earnings and economic figures

On February 28, 2568, European stock markets opened lower after US President Donald Trump threatened again to impose a 25% tariff on goods from the European Union (EU), and to proceed with tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China as scheduled next week.

The STOXX 600 index opened at 555.25 points, down 1.86 points or -0.33%. The French CAC-40 index opened at 8,047.04 points, down 55.48 points or -0.68%. The German DAX index opened at 22,409.25 points, down 141.64 points or -0.63%.

Meanwhile, Trump held talks with British Prime Minister Kir Starmer in Washington on Thursday. Trump hinted that Britain might be able to avoid tariffs, stating, "I think there's a very good chance, in the case of these two great and friendly countries, that we might be able to reach a real trade deal that doesn't involve tariffs."

Investors will also be watching corporate earnings, with a number of European companies due to report financial results, including Allianz, Sberbank, British Airways owner IAG, Holcim and UCB. Economic data from outside the region will also be on the cards, including German retail sales for January, French inflation figures and an update to the UK's national house price index.
