The Philippines' trade minister said he is preparing to negotiate with the United States, hoping to reduce the import tariff from 17% to zero, and offered to buy more agricultural products to ease trade pressure and enhance competitive advantage.

On April 28, 2025, at 4:25 PM, Bloomberg News reported that Philippine Trade Secretary Cristina Roque stated on April 28 that the Philippines aims to reduce the import tariffs imposed by the United States to 0% from the 17% previously announced by President Donald Trump.

“The expectation is that we want to get the best deal for us, and the goal is to have the lowest tariffs possible to create a trade advantage,”

The Philippine Trade Secretary is scheduled to meet with U.S. Commerce Department officials this week, with the Philippines proposing to purchase more agricultural products from the U.S. in exchange for tariff reductions, a move similar to those employed by some Southeast Asian countries.
