Bangkok joins hands with Google to use AI to adjust traffic lights

Bangkok collaborates with Google to use AI technology to adjust traffic light timings, reduce traffic congestion, increase travel flexibility, and help reduce pollution.
May 16, 2568 – Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced a partnership with Google's “Project Green Light” to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve traffic light timing, reduce road congestion, and help reduce air pollution in the capital city.
The project uses AI and driving behavior data from Google Maps to analyze traffic patterns and provide recommendations on how to adjust traffic light timings to make traffic flow smoother, reduce unnecessary stops, and reduce congestion. In addition to making it easier for road users to travel, it also has a positive effect on the environment.
Since February 2568, Bangkok has started to apply the project’s approach to key intersections in the city. Bangkok is one of 18 cities worldwide selected to join this pilot project, marking an important step towards effective traffic management in the city.
Mr. Chatchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, stated his vision: “Over the past three years, we have been committed to transforming Bangkok into a city of ‘opportunity and hope’ through our ‘9-pronged, 9-improvement’ strategy. This involves utilizing technology and collaboration from all sectors to develop a high-quality and livable city. Currently, we are implementing AI to manage traffic more efficiently and have established an AI committee to drive development and improve operational efficiency.”
Mr. Wisanu Trapsompol, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, stated, “The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is pleased to collaborate with Google on this project, utilizing data from Google Maps and AI to analyze traffic patterns. This will allow us to adjust traffic light timings to better suit actual traffic conditions, effectively reducing congestion. Currently, many intersections in Bangkok use a fixed timing system. This project will help analyze and adjust the duration of green and red lights based on traffic volume and conditions, leading to smoother traffic flow.”
Over the past 3 months, the project has analyzed traffic lights in various locations in Bangkok and proposed improvements. The BMA's traffic engineers will review each proposal for safety and suitability before it is put into practice.
Ms. Saranrat Boonritthongchai, Marketing Manager of Google Thailand, stated, “Project Green Light uses AI to help cities around the world manage traffic better and reduce air pollution. Preliminary data shows that using this technology can reduce traffic stops by up to 30% and reduce emissions by 10%, with over 55 million trips per month using the system. The success of the project in Bangkok is due to our collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and we hope to expand this technology to other intersections in the future.”
This project is another important step towards helping Bangkok move towards a smarter traffic system, reducing traffic congestion and promoting a better environment for everyone.
