Apple appeals to European Court after European Commission fines it €500m for violating Digital Markets Act by restricting developers from directing users to cheaper deals outside the App Store

After being fined €500 million ($587 million) earlier this year for breaching key rules aimed at limiting the power of big tech companies.

The European Commission ruled in April. It said Apple's technical and commercial restrictions that prevent app developers from directing users to cheaper offers outside the App Store violated the Digital Markets Act.

Apple, which had previously announced it would take legal action, filed its appeal on Monday, the last day of the deadline.

“Today we have filed an appeal because we believe that the European Commission’s decision and the unprecedented fines far exceed the legal limit,” Apple said in a statement

“As we will explain to the court, the European Commission is enforcing controls on how we manage our App Store and is imposing confusing business conditions on developers and negatively affecting users. We need to take action to avoid daily fines and we will present the facts to the court.”

Last month, Apple changed its App Store rules to comply with EU directives, removing technical and commercial restrictions on app developers to avoid daily fines of 5% of average global daily revenue, or about €50 million per day.

The EU competition regulator is now listening to feedback from app developers before deciding whether to accept Apple’s changes or demand that the company take further action.
