UK startup Nscale is surging, becoming a major player in AI infrastructure, with funding from Nvidia and Microsoft, and aims to reach 350,000 GPUs by 2570.

On September 18, 2025, at 2:57 PM, CNBC reported that just two years ago, Nscale was a small, unknown startup in the UK, but today the company has become one of the major players in Europe's AI infrastructure, with massive new investment from global partners.

In 2566, Nscale emerged from its stealth phase and in December announced a $155 million Series A round, followed by nearly $700 million in additional investment from Nvidia this year, giving the company the potential to rapidly scale its AI infrastructure.

Nscale was originally founded by Arkon Energy, which focused on crypto mining infrastructure, before spinning off to address the surging demand for AI data centers, similar to CoreWeave, an American company that started in crypto and is now valued at over $58,000 billion.

Nscale recently announced a $6.2 billion contract with Microsoft and Aker to develop AI infrastructure in Europe, specifically Norway, which will be a key base for hyperscale projects. The company is also involved in OpenAI's Stargate project in Norway and the UK, which aims to install over 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by 2027.

Microsoft is also aiming to build the UK's largest supercomputer at Loughton, using 23,000 Blackwell GPUs in the first phase, while Nvidia announced up to $15,000 billion in investment to bolster its AI capabilities in the UK and a further $683 million direct investment in Nscale.

Josh Payne, CEO and founder , stated that Nscale aims to address key challenges in Europe, namely the shortage of computing power and fragmented markets. Therefore, the company aims to build large-scale AI data centers to support the industry's growth. Payne believes the latest funding round will enable the company to expand its GPU capacity to 50,000 by the end of 2568 and to 150,000 the following year.

Nscale is considered a “national champion” in the UK’s AI infrastructure and plays a key role in Europe’s goal of developing sovereign AI, which mandates data processing to occur within the continent. The company currently plans to expand its data centers to over 1.3 gigawatts and aims for 350,000 GPUs by 2570.
