The US Supreme Court has ordered Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to remain in office until at least the end of 2568, pending a January 2569 hearing after President Donald Trump attempted to remove her, citing a mortgage dispute.
On October 2, 2025 at 7:53 a.m., CNBC reported that The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to remain in her post until her oral hearing in January 2569. To determine whether President Donald Trump has sufficient legal grounds to remove her from office.
The ruling is a setback for Trump, who had previously filed multiple petitions asking the court to immediately remove Cook from the Fed board of governors, but was unsuccessful due to an ongoing lawsuit by Cook challenging his removal.
Trump cited Cook's mortgage fraud convictions as reason for removing him from the seven-member board of governors. However, his first attempt in August came after he had previously unsuccessfully pressured Lisa Cook, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other governors to cut interest rates.
Lisa Cook denies all allegations, maintaining that no wrongdoing was committed in filing mortgage documents for homes she owns in Michigan and Georgia, and that no legal charges have been filed against her to date.
In a brief order, the US Supreme Court said only that Trump's request to lift a lower court order preventing his release from prison was postponed until an oral hearing in January 2569, with an unspecified date, and ordered the courthouse to schedule legal filings, including comments from outside parties interested in the case.
Trump's attempt to vacate Cook is seen as a precedent that could have implications for maintaining the Fed's longstanding immunity from political interference. Trump has insisted that the allegations against Cook constitute cause under the Federal Reserve Act to remove the governor.
The US Justice Department previously filed a lawsuit against Trump, claiming the lower court's order blocking his release from prison was another improper interference with the president's power.
Lisa Cook's legal team, Abby Lovell and Norm Eisen, released a statement after the Supreme Court's ruling, saying the decision was correct to allow Governor Cook to remain on the Federal Reserve Board and that they look forward to the court's next steps in the case.
White House Press Secretary Kush Desai It said President Trump legally removed Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, adding that: “We are confident we will ultimately prevail after the oral hearing in January.”
The Supreme Court's order allows the Fed to continue operating normally at least through the end of the year, with Cook still eligible to vote at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings in October and December, and possibly the January meeting.
At the FOMC's September meeting, the committee cut the policy interest rate by 0.25 percentage point and signaled further cuts at the remaining two meetings this year. Cook voted in favor of the rate cut, despite Trump's protests about her participation.
Trump's newly appointed Fed governor, Stephen Miran, voted against the proposal, calling for a 0.5 percentage point cut and also indicated in his dot plot that he wanted another 1.25 percentage point cut by the end of 2568.
