The Prime Minister has rejected a proposal from the previous government to allow Cambodian workers with expired permits to stay in Thailand, as proposed by the previous government in the Cabinet meeting on August 19th. He emphasized strict scrutiny and is preparing to thoroughly review the resolution.
November 10, 2568 – Ms. Traisulee Traisaranakul, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister revealed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered a postponement of the signing of a draft Ministry of Interior announcement granting special permission for Cambodian aliens to reside in the Kingdom, in accordance with the Cabinet resolution of August 19, 2568. This proposal was made during the previous government of Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, who was acting as Prime Minister, citing the need to thoroughly examine the information and strictly proceed in accordance with the law.
From the investigation of the relevant agencies, it was found that Nearly 1 Cambodian workers whose work permits expired since February 68 are unable to clearly verify their identity or address. If they are allowed to remain without verification, this could impact security, as well as problems with illegal immigration or transnational crime.
Ms. Traisulee said The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that the management of foreign workers is in compliance with the law, transparent, and accountable, to prevent any loopholes that could impact national security and the economy. He also instructed the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Labor to jointly review the details to ensure that all procedures are carried out correctly. Following this, a new Cabinet resolution will be reviewed to ensure thorough scrutiny.
The Cabinet resolution of August 19, 2025, contains a key point: granting temporary stay and work permits to migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam whose work permits have expired for one year to alleviate labor shortages. However, this resolution still requires the signature of the Minister of the Interior before it can take effect.
