The Danish Prime Minister warned Trump to stop threatening to seize Greenland, emphasizing that it is territory under Denmark and NATO and is not for sale, following the US arrest of the Venezuelan President.

On January 5, 2026, at 5:33 AM, CNBC reported that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned U.S. President Donald Trump to stop threatening to annex Greenland, just one day after the U.S. carried out a military operation that detained Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday, “The Kingdom of Denmark, and therefore Greenland, is part of NATO and therefore under the alliance’s security guarantees. We already have a defense agreement between the Kingdom and the United States that allows the United States broad access to Greenland.”

She added, “I strongly urge the United States to stop intimidating a long-standing ally, and to stop a country and a people who have made it clear they are not for sale.”

The warning came after Trump told The Atlantic magazine, "We absolutely need Greenland." Earlier over the weekend, Trump ordered the U.S. military to conduct an operation that led to the arrest of Maduro and his wife, who were brought to the U.S. to face drug-related charges. This operation followed months of U.S. military buildup and intimidation against Venezuela, with the Trump administration claiming Venezuela is involved in drug trafficking into the U.S.

The ouster of Maduro also sparked speculation that Trump's other territorial ambitions might be driven by force. Shortly after Maduro's arrest, Katie Miller, wife of Stephen Miller, a senior White House aide, posted an image of a map of Greenland covered with the U.S. flag on the X platform with the caption "SOON."

Trump has long expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark rich in mineral resources. Last month, he appointed Republican Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland. Furthermore, Trump has openly discussed the idea of making Canada, an independent nation, the 51st province of the United States.
