Trump indicates that Iran's new Supreme Leader is alive but injured, following the killing of his father on the first day of the US-Israeli-Iran conflict.

On March 13, 2026, at 10:41 AM, Reuters reported that U.S. President Donald Trump said he believed Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new Supreme Leader (whose father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was killed on the first day of the U.S.-Israeli-Iran war), was still alive but injured in the violence.

Since Iran's Council of Clergy elected Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader on Sunday, he has not appeared in public, with his first statement being read aloud on state television on Thursday.

An Iranian official told Reuters that the new Supreme Leader sustained minor injuries but was able to continue performing his duties, after state television had earlier reported that he had been wounded in the war.

Trump told Fox News' "The Brian Kilmeade Show," "I think he's probably still alive. I think he's injured, but I think he's alive in some form."

In his initial statement, Mojtaba Khamenei announced that he would continue to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed and called on neighboring countries to close their US military bases located on their territories, otherwise they could become targets of Iranian attacks.

The United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28, while Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel and other Gulf countries with US bases. As the war enters its second week, claiming thousands of lives and disrupting global financial markets, the leaders of Iran, Israel, and the United States have adopted a tough stance and vowed to continue fighting.
