This new innovation is designed to support a full digital transformation, focusing on enhancing defense with artificial intelligence (AI), expanding the capabilities of highly resilient SASE systems, and providing security preparedness capable of withstanding quantum computing attacks (Quantum-Safe) to strengthen the digital infrastructure of organizations worldwide.

Furthermore, they face challenges from complex data encryption environments. Therefore, a centralized operating system is a key factor in reducing system complexity, increasing comprehensive visibility, and expanding security capabilities without impacting core business operations.

A key highlight of FortiOS 8.0 is its ability to securely govern the use of generative AI within an organization. FortiView provides security teams with real-time visibility into both authorized and Shadow AI applications, enabling effective risk identification and control of data breaches through genAI tools.

Furthermore, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology is being used in Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems to detect sensitive information in the form of images or scanned files, which helps close vulnerabilities that traditional text detection systems cannot reach.

In addition, Fortinet has deployed AI agents to support operations across the Security Fabric, assisting in troubleshooting and system configuration through a conversational interface. This reduces the workload for IT personnel and minimizes the risk of human error that could lead to security vulnerabilities.

FortiOS 8.0 also further enhances Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) capabilities with the introduction of SASE Outpost, allowing organizations to enforce security policies closer to users and applications, whether deployed in private data centers or colocations, while maintaining centralized management on the cloud.

Furthermore, the Sovereign SASE option is presented to address data sovereignty issues, which are crucial for organizations that must comply with privacy regulations and national requirements. It allows for granular control over data record keeping and system controls (Control Plane) within a defined region.

To address potential future threats arising from quantum technology, Fortinet has incorporated Quantum-Resilient Cryptographic Controls into this version of its operating system. This includes the use of post-quantum certificates such as ML-DSA for authentication and key generation. Furthermore, the deep SSL authentication system has been upgraded to support hybrid key exchange, ensuring that critical data communications remain highly protected even as quantum computing becomes widespread.
