Gen Z is abandoning big farewell trips and opting for more frequent "short trips" to reset their mental health.

Agoda Travel Outlook reveals a new trend: 77% focus on pure relaxation and escape from the hustle and bustle at a budget-friendly price. The definition of value has changed: exploring unseen destinations can save up to 34% more money. Micro-vacations are gaining momentum, with 65% choosing short trips of 1-3 days, aligning with flexible lifestyles and modern work arrangements.
April 16, 2569–The image of travel for young people in 2569 is being rewritten by Gen Z. Thais are shifting from "seeing the world" to "seeking peace." Insights from Agoda Travel Outlook 2026 highlight the significant implication that travel has become a mental health tool, rather than merely a recreational activity for holidays as in the past.
When "rest" is not just a reward, but a survival mechanism.
This group of travelers is transitioning from long trips requiring extensive preparation to "short, frequent trips," with over 62% planning at least 1-3 trips this year. Interestingly, over 65% intentionally choose trips that are only 1-3 days long to seamlessly integrate them into their work or study schedules without disrupting their daily lives.
“Thai Gen Z is leading a significant shift in travel patterns towards purposeful and more frequent trips. For this generation, travel is essential for recharging and escaping the stresses of daily life, all within a reasonable budget,” — Ms. Arkporn Rodkhong, Country Director for Thailand and Indochina at Agoda.
Value for money in a new dimension: Cheaper…plus more privacy.
In terms of spending habits, Thai Gen Z remains price-conscious, with 72% considering "money in their pockets" as the deciding factor in choosing a destination. However, this frugality doesn't always mean compromising quality of life; it often leads to seeking unconventional and innovative alternatives.
A notable phenomenon is the “Hidden Gems Preference,” where 34% are willing to switch from popular tourist cities to under-the-radar destinations if they offer greater value and real cost savings. This strategy aligns with the desire for peaceful relaxation (77% prioritize relaxation above all else), making escape from city crowds a direct solution to this age group's pain points.
Social Connectivity: Short but Profound
Despite growing up in the digital world, Thai Gen Z places a high value on real-world relationships. Data indicates that 44% prefer traveling with their partners or close friends to share experiences. Short trips therefore serve as "Quality Time" that can be enjoyed frequently without waiting for year-end bonuses or long holidays.
"The goals of today's Gen Z travelers are clearer: they are looking for a good balance between escaping stress and getting value for their money at an affordable price."
This trend sends a clear signal to businesses in the tourism industry, including hotels and airlines, that "flexibility" and "tangible value" are key. Designing packages that cater to short-term staycations (Staycation or Weekend Gateway), as well as offering attractively priced accommodations in smaller cities, will become a golden opportunity to capture the hearts of one of the most influential and frequent traveler customer segments in the market in 2569.
For Agoda, expanding options to include both mainstream tourist destinations and lesser-known cities is a key strategy to cater to the "New Nomadic" group who want to recharge their lives whenever they want, within a budget they can truly control.
