Bart Melek, head of global commodity strategy at TD Securities, said, “There is a risk of a significant drop in gold prices if the conflict in the Middle East is not resolved.”
The prospect of further interest rate cuts in the U.S. has significantly diminished, according to data from CME Group's FedWatch tool, following a rapid increase in U.S. producer and consumer prices in April, driven by energy sector support.
Although gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation, high interest rates tend to negatively impact it, as it is an asset that does not yield returns in the form of interest.
Nikos Tzabouras, senior market analyst at Tradu.com, stated in a research report, "Gold prices still lack a clear direction as the market assesses geopolitical uncertainty, the economic impact of conflicts in the Middle East, and the hope that a meeting between Trump and Xi might help find a solution."
Meanwhile, Xi told Trump that trade negotiations were making progress on Thursday, but warned that differences of opinion on Taiwan could damage relations between the two countries. However, the summary of the discussions from the US side did not mention the issue of Taiwan.
Among other precious metals, the spot price of silver fell 3.6% to $84.84 per ounce, platinum dropped 3.1% to $2,071.53, and palladium declined 3.5% to $1,447.52.
