The U.S. government has signaled that it will not immediately announce tariffs on semiconductor imports, even though it sees them as an important tool for bringing manufacturing back to the United States. It emphasized the need to determine the appropriate timing and level of tariffs.

May 23, 2569 The United States has no immediate plans to impose tariffs on semiconductor imports, even though the government continues to view tariffs as an important tool to protect the chip industry and encourage the repatriation of manufacturing back to the United States.

โดย Jamieson Greer, U.S. Trade Representative He said during a visit to Micron Technology's memory chip manufacturing plant expansion project near Washington, D.C.: The use of tax measures under Section 232 of the National Security Act requires appropriate timing and level of implementation to support increased domestic chip production capacity.

Greer stated that: While imposing import tariffs on semiconductors is important, what is even more crucial is determining the appropriate timing and level of these tariffs. And reiterate that The new tax will not be implemented immediately, as the government wants to avoid impacting companies that still rely on foreign supply chains during the transition.

He added: The semiconductor industry has a complex supply chain, and manufacturing has been relocating outside the United States for decades. Therefore, the government wants to allow for the import of a certain amount of chips while companies gradually expand production capacity and relocate their bases back to the United States.

Earlier in January. Donald Trump's administration specify that The United States can only produce about 10% of its domestic chip needs, making it heavily reliant on foreign supply chains.

Micron revealed on Friday (May 22) that it has begun production of its 1-alpha DRAM wafers in Manassas, Virginia, which are considered the most advanced memory chips manufactured in the U.S. DRAM chips play a crucial role in a wide range of devices, including personal computers, automobiles, industrial applications, wireless communications, and AI. Micron's high-bandwidth memory is also essential in supporting next-generation AI models.

In June 2568, Micron announced an additional $30,000 billion investment in the U.S., bringing the company's total investment plan to $200,000 billion.

Previously, in December 2567, the U.S. Department of Commerce under the Joe Biden administration approved nearly $6,200 billion in subsidies to Micron for semiconductor manufacturing in New York and Idaho under the $52,700 billion CHIPS and Science Act enacted in 2565.
