Asian stock markets closed mixed today (June 9, 2569), with South Korea surging more than 8% to recover from heavy selling the previous day. Japan climbed over 2% driven by buying in semiconductor stocks following the positive trend in the US market. China closed higher on strong export figures, while Hong Kong closed slightly lower amid uncertainty surrounding the Middle East and negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Japanese stock market
The Nikkei index rose sharply, driven by renewed buying in technology and semiconductor stocks following gains in the US market. Shares of chip manufacturers Tokyo Electron and Advantest climbed, as investors eased concerns about earlier selling pressure on AI stocks, leading to a more positive investment sentiment.
- The Nikkei closed at 65,416.63, up 1,392.03 points, or +2.17%.
Chinese stock market
The Shanghai Composite Index closed higher, boosted by better-than-expected Chinese trade data. May exports rose 19.4% year-on-year, with exports to the United States surging over 35% to their highest level in several years. Exports of AI technology, electric vehicles, and batteries also helped boost investor confidence.
- The Shanghai Composite Index closed at 4,010.03, up 50.69 points, or +1.28%.
Hong Kong Stock Market
The Hang Seng Index closed slightly lower, despite intraday support from some technology stocks. However, the market faced pressure after the Pentagon added more Chinese companies to its list of those deemed to have ties to the Chinese military, including Alibaba and BYD, leading investors to become more cautious amid the fragility of U.S.-China relations.
- The Hang Seng Index closed at 24,565.90 points, down 91.16 points or -0.37%.
South Korean stock market
The KOSPI index surged more than 8%, recovering from the previous day's sharp fall, driven by semiconductor stocks. Investors returned to buying AI-related stocks following the recovery in the US stock market, led by strong gains in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. This made South Korea the best-performing market in the region today.
- The South Korean Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) closed at 8,096.93 points, up 612.52 points or 8.18%.
