Thailand and Malaysia are enhancing cooperation in all dimensions, agreeing to accelerate border infrastructure connectivity, opening a new Sadao border crossing, reviving railway and ferry routes, and aiming to boost trade to 3 billion dollars.
On July 9, 2569, at 1:13.10 PM (Malaysian local time, which is one hour ahead of Thailand), at the Prime Minister's Office of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office. revealed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul held a full plenary session with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in all dimensions, creating "areas of opportunity" in economics, trade, investment, tourism, and security. This will directly impact the quality of life and income of the people of both countries.
Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office said The key issue of this discussion was accelerating infrastructure connectivity between Thailand and Malaysia to facilitate travel for citizens, reduce transportation costs for goods, and enhance cross-border trade potential. Tomorrow, the prime ministers of both countries will jointly inaugurate the new Sadao border crossing and the Bukit Kayu Hitam border crossing, which are the border checkpoints with the highest trade value between Thailand and Malaysia.
In addition, both sides agreed to expedite several key projects, including the resumption of ferry services between Satun province and Kuala Perlis, the integration of a unified ticketing system for the Bangkok–Hat Yai–Butterworth railway line, the restoration of the Suai Ko-Lok–Rantau Panjang railway line, and the construction of a new bridge, in order to upgrade transportation and logistics throughout the region.
Alongside infrastructure development, Thailand and Malaysia will jointly promote investment, develop local entrepreneurs, create jobs, develop workforce skills, and upgrade tourism, so that people in the border areas can benefit from economic growth comprehensively.
In terms of security, both countries reaffirmed their cooperation in building peace in the southern border provinces, agreeing that economic development and peacebuilding must go hand-in-hand. They also pledged to increase cooperation in combating transnational crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and border crime, as well as establishing a joint working group to oversee areas along the Kolok River and developing a flood warning system between the two countries.
On the economic front, both sides aim to boost bilateral trade to reach US$30,000 billion in the near future, while accelerating supply chain linkages in food security, energy, and high-tech industries. They also instructed their respective agriculture ministers to find joint solutions for opening agricultural and fisheries markets as soon as possible.
On the same occasion, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding on agriculture, covering cooperation in crops, livestock, fisheries, research, technology transfer, human resource development, and enhancing food security in both countries.
The Prime Minister also stated that 2570 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Malaysia, and therefore he has instructed relevant agencies to expedite the implementation of the discussions into concrete results. He will also accelerate the completion of the MOU currently being drafted between Thai and Malaysian agencies and extend an official invitation to the Malaysian Prime Minister to visit Thailand in order to continue cooperation that benefits the people of both countries.
On this occasion, the Malaysian Prime Minister also commended Thailand's role in the Myanmar issue. Both Malaysia and Thailand believe that the Myanmar problem can be resolved through the constructive participation of all parties. Thailand, as a country sharing a border with Myanmar, has made efforts to resolve the unrest in Myanmar, including providing continuous humanitarian assistance.
Regarding the issues of shrimp and sea bass, the Ministers of Agriculture of both countries have reached a joint solution and will expedite its implementation to resolve the farmers' problems.
