South China Sea tensions escalate! The United States condemns China's aggressive behavior after a Philippine sailor was injured.

The United States accused China of dangerous and aggressive behavior after the Philippines reported that Chinese coast guard officers assaulted and injured a sailor during a confrontation at Second Thomas Sandbank.
On July 21, 2026, at 9:21 AM, CNBC reported that the United States issued a statement condemning China's dangerous and aggressive behavior after the Philippines stated that Chinese coast guard officers used a wooden baton to strike a Philippine sailor in the head, causing injury, during a confrontation near the Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed South China Sea. The incident also damaged a Philippine Navy rubber boat.
The incident occurred during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's scheduled visit to Manila this week to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, where tensions in the South China Sea are expected to be a key topic of discussion. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will also be attending the meeting.
This visit also comes just days after President Donald Trump accused China of significant interference in the U.S. election, further straining relations between the two countries.
The Second Thomas Sandbar is considered one of the hottest points of conflict in the South China Sea, with China claiming sovereignty over almost all of it, despite a 2559 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration that the claim had no basis under international law. The area lies within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and since 2566, Chinese vessels have been accused of using water cannons, lasers, and ramming to disrupt Philippine supply missions.
In a statement, State Department spokesman Tommy Pickott said the U.S. stands with its ally, the Philippines, and called on China to immediately cease its destabilizing behavior. He also reiterated the 2559 arbitration tribunal ruling that China's claims in the South China Sea have no legal effect.
The United States and the Philippines have had a mutual defense treaty since 2494, which could allow the United States to play a role if the situation escalates into a serious military confrontation.
The Philippine military stated that the incident occurred near the BRP Sierra Madre, a warship that the Philippines beached nearly 30 years ago to assert its claim to the area. They further stated that a Chinese coast guard boat with eight personnel approached the base before becoming violent when Philippine Navy vessels attempted to push it away.
However, China denies the allegations. The Chinese coast guard claims that the Philippine small boat illegally left the BRP Sierra Madre, ignored multiple warnings, and rammed the Chinese patrol vessel. They also allege that Philippine officers attacked Chinese officers first with oars and sticks.
This event poses a challenge to the Philippines as the host of the ASEAN summit. Wang Yi is scheduled to meet with Philippine Foreign Minister Teresa Lazaro on the sidelines of the summit, marking the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since 2567. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The South China Sea issue is expected to be a key topic of discussion in both meetings.
