On August 15, 2569, Reuters news agency reported that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called on South Korea and North Korea to resume talks. To create a “peace regime” on the Korean Peninsula and replace the armistice agreement that has been in place since the Korean War ended in 2496.
President Lee Jae-myung Speaking in a speech commemorating the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, he said: South Korea wants to coexist peacefully with North Korea and needs a tension management mechanism to prevent the situation from escalating into military conflict.
The South Korean president also proposed discussions on key issues, including North Korea's nuclear program, arguing that establishing channels of communication and ongoing risk reduction measures would help prevent conflict and create long-term stability.
However, relations between the two Koreas remain strained. North Korea, under Kim Jong Un, rejects the idea of reunification and views South Korea as an enemy state, while continuing to strengthen its military and nuclear capabilities. Meanwhile, North Korea opposes the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States scheduled for August 17-27.
Lee also addressed relations with Japan, expressing a desire to move beyond historical conflicts and build cooperation with Japan as a neighboring country to promote peace and prosperity in the region.
