Capital outflows from US Spot Bitcoin ETFs reached their highest level in six weeks amid a sluggish market, dragging down the crypto market due to high interest rates, delayed legislation, and a lack of confidence stemming from a safety-conscious sentiment.

August 17, 2026 – Thirteen publicly traded spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. experienced their largest net outflow since late June, reflecting a rapid slowdown in trading activity following their initial recovery in early August.

Data compiled by Bloomberg News indicates that on August 10, a total of $389.7 million flowed out of the fund, reversing the previous week's net inflow of $853.5 million. This followed a temporary market boost driven by increased demand for assets through traditional financial institutions after a security vulnerability in Coinkite Inc.'s Coldcard digital wallet compromised confidence in self-storage of assets.

Capital market and policy experts from blockchain security firm CertiK stated that the capital outflows reflect a sluggish investment climate and caution among institutional investors, amidst Bitcoin's price movement which has remained within a narrow range of around $63,400, a drop of more than 50% from its all-time high in October of the previous year.

The main pressures on the market continue to stem from concerns about potentially persistently high interest rates and delays in pushing through legislation for a digital asset market in the US. Meanwhile, Bitcoin's implied volatility index has fallen to around 37, reflecting light trading activity. This is because ETFs are the primary channel reflecting institutional investor demand; if capital outflows continue, it could create further pressure on liquidity and the price direction of the cryptocurrency market in the coming period.
