OpenAI is expanding its collaboration with Samsung on both research and production of new chip models to meet the growing demand for memory chips, as the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users in South Korean organizations has surged approximately 28-fold in the past year.

On September 9, 2026, at 1:13 PM, Reuters reported that OpenAI is strengthening its collaboration with Samsung Electronics in developing the company's new generation of chips, expanding its relationship with the South Korean tech giant in both semiconductors and AI services for the business sector, amid the continuously increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips.

Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, revealed during a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday that one of the areas where OpenAI and Samsung Electronics have made the most progress is in joint manufacturing and research into the next-generation chips that OpenAI is developing. However, he did not disclose further details about these chips.

Kim also stated that Samsung Electronics is one of the largest organizations in the world to utilize ChatGPT, with company employees both in South Korea and overseas using ChatGPT in various areas, from research and development to marketing and sales.

Samsung Electronics stated that it could not confirm any information related to customers.

This collaboration with Samsung comes at a time when OpenAI is accelerating the construction of its own chip infrastructure. In June, the company launched Jalapeno, its first custom-designed AI chip, developed in partnership with Broadcom.

Engineers from OpenAI and Broadcom jointly designed the chip for AI inference tasks, or the process of processing data to generate answers for AI applications such as ChatGPT. OpenAI stated at the time that Taiwan's TSMC would manufacture the chip.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed a letter of intent last year to supply memory chips to OpenAI's Stargate data center project.

Kim believes that the demand for memory chips will continue to increase as faster and more complex processing demands higher-performance chips. Therefore, establishing collaboration with South Korean semiconductor manufacturers is one of OpenAI Korea's priorities.

On the other hand, Samsung is expanding its use of generative AI within the organization. The company revealed in June that employees in its Device eXperience division, which oversees smartphones, televisions, and home appliances, will be able to use OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude for internal work.

The demand for AI in South Korea's business sector is also increasing rapidly. OpenAI reports that the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users in South Korean companies and institutions increased approximately 28-fold by the end of August compared to the same period last year, as organizations expand the adoption of AI from individual or task-based use to enterprise-level applications.

OpenAI states that companies are increasingly using AI in a wide range of tasks, spanning legal, sales, finance, marketing, and operations. However, the company did not disclose actual user numbers.

South Korea is also a key market for OpenAI, with the country having the largest number of paid ChatGPT subscribers outside of the United States as of late last year, according to the company.

OpenAI anticipates further acceleration in adoption after the company launched the GPT-6 Astra on September 4th, the latest model that OpenAI says offers improved performance in computing, professional work, science, coding, and cybersecurity.
