The Iranian president declared emphatically that Iran would not surrender to the United States, affirming its ability to resist aggression from the US and Israel. Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister called on all parties to use negotiation and diplomacy to end the conflict, amidst impacts on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
On September 12, 2569, CNBC reported that Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian stated that Iran would not surrender and that his country could withstand aggression from the United States and Israel.
“Iran has been able to stand up to Israel and the United States successfully,” Peseshkyan said late Friday while speaking to a group of Indian religious leaders in New Delhi. “Because we are seeking truth and justice, we will not surrender to the arrogance that uses power to oppress.”
Peseshkian's remarks came ahead of the BRICS summit in India over the weekend and followed U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that if Washington did not take military action against Iran, Iran might destroy Israel and the Middle East, including beginning attacks on U.S. cities.
"If I have to do it again, I'll do the same thing I've done before," Trump said on Thursday.
Pesekyan, who is visiting India for the first time, also met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. During their bilateral discussions, Modi expressed concern about the safety of seafarers and emphasized the need for peace, as well as freedom of navigation and trade.
Shipping of oil and other goods through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route separating Iran and Oman, has come to near-total halts since the United States and Israel began their war with Iran on February 28, leaving ships and crews stranded for weeks or even months.
The Indian Prime Minister continued to call for a resolution of the conflict in the Middle East through “negotiation and diplomacy”.
Global crude oil prices surged following escalations in tensions between the United States and Iran this month. Higher energy prices are a major concern for countries like India, a significant energy importer.
India, the world's largest and fastest-growing economy, is one of the most vulnerable countries to supply disruptions from war. India imports nearly 85% of its total fuel needs and relies heavily on energy supply chains that pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has affected many Indian crew members. In July, two ships with a combined Indian crew of 30 were attacked while traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian government stated that 10 crew members died in the conflict in the Middle East.
Modi and Pesekyan were photographed shaking hands warmly after leaving the BRICS Business Forum on Friday.
The Iranian embassy in India posted a message on X praising the friendship between the two countries, stating, "When the leaders of two great nations shake hands, they remind us of the historical friendship between two great civilizations."
