European stock markets opened lower, concerned about the Middle East and the slowdown in AI development, pressuring chip stocks. Investors are also watching the results of the Fed, BOJ, and BoE meetings.

On September 14, 2026, at 3:05 PM, European stock markets opened lower amid pressure from geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and concerns about the direction of artificial intelligence (AI) development after executives of major US technology companies warned that AI development might be progressing too rapidly.

Meanwhile, investors are holding back on investments pending the results of monetary policy meetings of major central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), the Bank of Japan (BOJ), and the Bank of England (BoE).

The STOXX 600 index opened at 638.52 points, down 0.58 points or 0.09%. The French CAC 40 index opened at 8,132.63 points, down 47.14 points or 0.58%, and the German DAX index opened at 25,498.74 points, down 69.82 points or 0.27%.

Shares of AI-related technology companies and semiconductor manufacturers faced selling pressure after Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, suggested slowing the development of advanced AI models to allow time to address security risks. This proposal was supported by executives at other major AI companies in the U.S.

These concerns pressured chip stocks in Europe. As of 2:51 PM Thai time, BE Semiconductor shares were down 6.10%, ASML shares were down 4.34%, and STMicroelectronics shares were down 3.59%, making the technology sector one of the major drivers of pressure on European stock markets at the opening of trading.
