Mr. Poon Panichpibul, Money and Capital Strategy Analyst at Krungthai Global Markets, Krungthai Bank, revealed that, regarding gold prices, even though the overall financial market sentiment is risk-off, market participants' concerns about the prospect of interest rate hikes by major central banks continue to pressure gold prices (COMEX gold futures for December 2026 delivery) to fluctuate around $4,310-4,360 per ounce.
Gold prices plunge to their lowest level in over a month! Oil prices surge – inflation fuels believing the Fed will raise interest rates.
Gold prices fell to their lowest level in over a month on Monday, after oil prices surged and US inflation data exceeded expectations, boosting expectations of a Fed rate hike at this week's meeting. A stronger dollar, however, pressured gold prices.
CNBC reported that gold prices fell to their lowest level in over a month on Monday, driven by a surge in oil prices and better-than-expected inflation data from Friday, fueling expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will raise interest rates at its monetary policy meeting this week.
Spot gold prices fell 1.8% to $4,271.59 per ounce, their lowest level since August 7, while U.S. gold futures declined 2.2% to $4,311.20 per ounce.
“Today we have significantly higher crude oil prices, which is driving inflation expectations and suggesting that major central banks around the world will need to tighten monetary policies to control inflation, which is a negative factor for precious metals,” said Jim Wyckoff, a market analyst at the American Gold Exchange.
Most economists surveyed by Reuters expect the Fed to raise interest rates on Wednesday and at least one more time by the end of March, reversing a fragile view that the central bank would keep rates unchanged, which came before official data on Friday showed inflation remained strong.
The consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.4% last month, after increasing 0.1% in July, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday.
Investors are estimating an approximately 89% chance that the Fed will raise interest rates at its monetary policy meeting, according to data from CME's FedWatch tool.
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is also expected to raise interest rates on Friday, amid rising energy prices and little sign that tensions in the Middle East are easing.
Although gold is generally considered an inflation hedge, higher interest rates are likely to reduce the attractiveness of gold, which does not provide an interest return.
Oil prices rose about 4% on Monday following new attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy and civilian infrastructure, including Iranian attacks on ships in the Gulf, fueling supply concerns after the closure of a key Saudi oil pipeline.
Diplomacy in the Middle East appears to have stalled after a meeting between Iran and other Gulf powers was postponed.
The dollar rose to its highest level in two weeks, making dollar-denominated gold more expensive for holders of other currencies.
For other precious metals, spot prices of silver fell 2.5% to $62.88 per ounce, platinum declined 2% to $1,759.87 per ounce, and palladium dropped 0.6% to $1,291.50 per ounce.
Investment advice on gold this morning from YLG.
- Yesterday, the price dropped below $4,293–4,282, leading to a further decline. However, selling pressure has begun to ease, suggesting a potential rebound today, at least in the short term. But if the rebound fails to break through $4,403, caution is advised as this could be a temporary bounce before a further decline.
- A high-risk buyer can consider a short-term trade on the bounce if the price doesn't fall below $4,254 (stop-loss if it drops below $4,254), and then sell for profit at $4,318–4,355.
- Take a low-risk approach and wait for a price rebound to open a sell position if the price fails to break above $4,403. Buy back if the price does not fall below $4,288–4,254 (set a stop-loss on the sell position if it breaks above $4,403).
