Bill Gates points out that governments worldwide are still insufficiently prepared to cope with the changes brought about by AI, warning of risks to employment, attacks, and AI addiction.
On September 15, 2026, at 11:09 AM, Reuters reported that Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and billionaire philanthropist, warned that no government around the world is adequately prepared for the changes that artificial intelligence (AI) will bring to society, amid increasing risks to employment, the use of AI in attacks, and AI addiction.
Bill Gates, who previously held a positive view of AI, has recently changed his stance, expressing increasing concern about the technology's impact. He noted that no government has adequately studied and prepared for this, emphasizing that governments are far behind in this area.
However, Gates sees immense potential in AI to help the world's poorest populations if the technology is managed properly and access is made equitable for all. The Gates Foundation announced plans to invest at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to AI.
This investment is part of the foundation's previously announced annual spending plan of $9 billion, which will support partners in applying AI in education, public health, and agriculture, as well as developing the data infrastructure necessary for AI, such as enabling Large Language Models to support a wide range of languages used worldwide.
Bill Gates stated that , particularly in the healthcare sector, the potential of AI is enormous, from supporting frontline healthcare workers to discovering and developing new drugs and vaccines.
Meanwhile, Bill Gates called on governments across the world to cooperate in preventing potential problems arising from AI , comparing the arrival of such technology to a disaster movie where humanity must work together to confront an external threat.
Bill Gates stated that AI is like extraterrestrial intelligence that has infiltrated humanity, and that countries need to cooperate to deal with this technology, just as in movies where the United States, China, and other nations must cooperate when faced with a common threat.
Bill Gates revealed that he has discussed his concerns about AI with several world leaders, including President Donald Trump and his administration, and plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year to discuss the issue further.
